DBS Launches Annual Update Service Renewal Notification for Volunteers

The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) is rolling out an improved renewal process for volunteer subscribers of the Update Service. This new system, launching on Sunday, 8 December 2024, will require volunteers to confirm annually whether they wish to continue their subscription.

What’s Changing?

Previously, volunteers subscribed to the Update Service did not have a dedicated reminder to confirm their ongoing need for the service. With this enhancement, volunteers will receive an email notification 30 days before their renewal date, prompting them to confirm their subscription.

How the Renewal Notification Works

  • Subscribers will receive an email 30 days before their renewal date (which is based on their original sign-up date).

  • They must log into their Update Service account and confirm their wish to continue.

  • If they confirm, the same renewal process will repeat annually.

  • If no action is taken, their subscription will automatically be cancelled.

Why This Matters

Failure to confirm the renewal means:

  • The DBS certificate will no longer be updated through the service.

  • Organisations will no longer be able to check the certificate.

  • If a DBS check is needed in the future, the volunteer will have to reapply.

Action for Volunteers

To prepare for this change, DBS advises all volunteers to ensure that their registered email address is up to date and accessible. If an outdated or incorrect email is linked to their account, they may miss the renewal notification, resulting in an unintended cancellation of their subscription.

Final Thoughts

This new renewal process is designed to keep the DBS Update Service efficient while ensuring that only those who actively require it remain subscribed. Volunteers should take a moment to check their email details and be ready for the first round of notifications in December 2024. Keeping DBS certificates current is essential for continued eligibility in volunteer roles that require them.

For any further assistance, volunteers are encouraged to visit the official DBS website or contact the DBS support team.
